Ever Struggled Finding Data to Back Up Your Writing?

Sometimes when you’re writing a research paper for class, you need some data to back up your claims. However, most of us don’t know where to find that data. Today, I’m going to introduce you to a data source that I’ve found handy -

Let’s say your paper is about different modes of transportation in New York City. You’ll start by going to  the DataUSA site and searching for transportation in New York.”

If you scroll down the page a bit, you see the Commuter Transportation” section. There you can easily explore the different methods people use to get to work.
On this chart, the red bars are New York and the gray bars are the US average. You can easily see that public transit accounts for more than 50% of transportation in New York, and that only about 20% of people drive alone.

On the other hand, let’s say that you want to flesh out the differences between dentists and dental hygienists. Search for dentists”

Now click Add Comparison” and search for Dental Hygienist.”

Here, you can compare such things as the average wage and age. And if you scroll down, you can explore Education and Demographic information, as well as much more.

In this short post, we haven't even scratched the surface of what you can find with DataUSA. So go exploring; you never know what you might find!
